Station looks to lower waste footprint

Carbon Smart worked with Southern Railway Ltd carrying out an in-depth Resource Optimisation Review (ROR) at East Croydon station, as part of a WRAP and UK Government initiative.

With 6 tonnes of waste generated each week, all of which was being sent to landfill at an annual cost of over £30,000, Southern were keen to establish a waste management process that improved their environmental performance and cut down their waste bill. Operated 24 hours a day and with over 20 million entries and exits made by passengers each year, the level of activity and subsequent sources of waste generation at the station are vast.

Jack began the ROR process by establishing the volumes and content of existing waste and areas where recycling rates could be improved. This was followed by mapping stakeholders across the site to confirm areas of activity and waste generation. We ensured that all the retailers and the waste management service provider were involved in the process to garner as many viewpoints as possible. With so many people passing through the station, it was essential that the recycling scheme selected was simple to use and complied with strict safety requirements, whilst maximising the potential to divert as many material streams as possible from landfill.

We designed a new three-stream waste management system for use across the station: Dry Mixed Recyclates, food waste and residual (going to energy-from-waste). We supported transition to the new system and provided ongoing support during the bedding-in stage.

Fantastic savings for environment and organisation

After Carbon Smart’s Review, recycling rates showed a huge improvement, increasing from 0% to 93%. Because of the huge decrease in waste going to landfill, Southern Railway Ltd is saving an estimated £10,000 per year on waste management costs.

“Southern Rail have found the Resource Optimisation Review process to be of great benefit to us. We were able to identify significant savings through improvements in our waste management practices and the team at our East Croydon Station are now fully engaged and are working on sharing their learning across our network. We’d definitely recommend it!”
