In the relatively short time since its publication (2011), ISO 50001 has become the internationally recognised standard for implementing a strategic and systematic energy management system, with proven energy and energy cost savings. ISO 50001 helps organisations integrate an energy management system (EnMS) to improve energy performance use and the efficiency and security of energy consumption. The standard is voluntary and available to organisations, of any size and sector, to understand energy usage and identify realistic ways of reducing consumption, emissions and therefore costs.
ISO 50001 requires continual energy performance improvement but does not state specific energy performance goals. Organisations must set and pursue their own goals for continual energy performance improvement. All ISO standards are based on the same management system. If your organisation already has an ISO standard in place, the same management system can be developed and used in conjunction with the two ISO standards.
