Recycling engagement needed on a grand scale

Broadgate Estates Ltd manages Broadgate, a prestigious office estate hosting 30,000 workers in the heart of the City of London. In May 2013, with a new waste collection scheme about to commence, Carbon Smart were brought in to help meet ambitious recycling targets by getting all the service users informed, on-board and compliant.
Broadgate Estates needed to communicate the principles of the new scheme to the full variety and volume of service users on site. It needed to secure a high uptake with the scheme across the estate’s 60 retailers. It also wanted to establish accurate monitoring of the current situation and of the scheme once implemented, to track progress and ensure that areas on site that required improvement were focused on.

Recycling is our history

Carbon Smart originally emerged from the waste management company Paper Round, so has a background in developing waste management improvement schemes for multi-site clients with a variety of stakeholders and service users. We worked closely with Paper Round to roll-out a complete package of waste management and internal communications.
We created bespoke tools and resources for communicating information across the site and for monitoring progress to support the scheme. Carbon Smart became the eyes and ears of the estates team, and by establishing clear, consistent and regular communications with and between tenants and the cleaning team, was able to achieve great results.

Targets exceeded, resources saved

Thanks to a systematic, practical and engaged approach we surpassed Broadgate Estates’ targets: recycling rates increased from 55% to 71% in less than 3 months, while food waste recycling increased by over 150%. This means that food which would previously have broken down in landfill and produced the greenhouse gas methane was instead being sent to anaerobic digestion, creating biofertiliser and renewable energy.

“We were very impressed with the level of knowledge demonstrated by the auditor and the amount of detail included in the report, we would definitely recommend the Environmental Waste Champion Audit to any organisation looking to improve/increase their waste management systems and recycling operations.”
