Dentsu Aegis Network: Long-term carbon reporting
Carbon footprint needed across global network
Carbon Smart have been calculating Aegis Media’s carbon footprint since 2009. Our understanding of their complex global portfolio has helped us to create a strong working methodology and harness a challenging data set that changes dramatically year on year. In 2013, Aegis Media merged with global media agency network Dentsu, forming the Dentsu Aegis Network – another chapter in their dynamic business history.
Dentsu Aegis Network is committed to maintaining their reputation for market-leading carbon reporting and carbon reduction. For this they need a robust carbon footprint which engages staff and can speak to their stakeholders through their CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) submission.
Complications arise from the huge size of the network, which has over 23,000 employees in 110 countries representing dozens of brands each with their own identity. A large proportion of the Dentsu Aegis Network’s offices are small tenants set within multi-tenanted buildings which can lead to difficulties in securing robust energy data. In addition, staff turnover makes keeping consistent reporting contacts a challenge.
Our solid relationship ensures consistency with progress
Carbon Smart’s Julie and Sarah have built a strong relationship with Dentsu Aegis Network and take time each year to understand the evolution of their reporting requirements. The recent merger has dramatically increased the number of reporting offices globally, which must all be added to the carbon footprint of the organisation.
Dentsu Aegis Network expects a fast turnaround between submitting data and receiving their calculated footprint, including validation of the data, which means Carbon Smart has to work quickly but with meticulous attention to detail. The dataset is vast, and in places incomplete, so the team’s extensive experience of handling large databases is invaluable.
Finished footprint is globally accessible
The Carbon Smart team validate the Dentsu Aegis Network’s data and produce their carbon footprint each year, which is broken down into subsections to help Dentsu Aegis Network understand its impact on a more local level: by business division, brand, country and office. Dentsu Aegis Network receives the report in an accessible format so that each of its reporting champions can locate and appraise the performance of their country or office.
Carbon Smart has helped Dentsu Aegis Network to appreciate the impact of their estate’s material emissions hotspots and establish the importance of a comprehensive data management system for capturing information across the network.
