The Office for Public Management (OPM) work to create a positive impact on public services and to achieve improved social results. They provide innovative services in consultancy, people development and research. They also help organisations that want to make a greater social impact, meet the needs of their communities and respond to change.

 

OPM made a commitment in July 2006 to take the necessary practical actions to reduce their energy bills, take responsibility for their contribution to climate change and reduce costs.

 

By seeking the assistance of Carbon Smart, the job of identifying and prioritising key actions to reduce our carbon footprint was made very straightforward.


This included:

  • Ensuring office equipment is managed correctly(e.g. eliminating non-business hours energy consumption).
  • Sourcing a green energy tariff.
  • Installation of building insulation.
  • Replacing old boilers with high-efficiency condensing boilers.
  • Incorporating energy efficiency in maintenance and purchasing guidelines.
  • Contributing to Trees for Cities to offset some of our carbon footprint.
  • Planting an OPM legacy wood with the Woodland Trust.

 

OPM choose Carbon Smart for our specialism in achieving carbon savings in the office environment, covering lighting, heating/cooling, office equipment, business travel, behaviour, waste, green purchasing and carbon offset.

 

This enabled OPM to engage all their staff in the process, set up a "Green Group" which helped to inform and involve the staff. All members of OPM now are fully committed to environmentally sustainable work practices.

 

The results have been very impressive with OPM's total energy spend and carbon footprint reducing by 12% respectively since Carbon Smart's intervention two years ago. This far exceeds equivalent carbon reduction rates of 2.5% p.a. for organisations in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries. In recognition of their ongoing committment to environmental improvement OPM are now a Carbon Smart® Gold Award holder.
