Summary
The BPIF represents some of the 8, 000 printing manufacturers in the UK, industry which is the 5th largest contributor to national GDP. As the industry uses a raft of chemicals the BPIF were keen to engage Carbon Smart to ensure their members managed potentially harmful chemical and precious paper resources in the most responsible way possible. The program – funded by the EU via the London Development Agency (LDA) is free to project participants and is a unique chance for London SMEs to gain credible advice and marketing potential.

Client’s objectives
The BPIF were keen to support their members by providing a free service, not only to help them reduce their environmental impact but also to offer forward thinking advice in a testing financial climate. Underpinning our ability to succeed in this delivery is Carbon Smarts expert skills in project management and output tracking. The BPIF not only require a bespoke service for all project participants but also the provision of detailed project data to support the requirements of the LDA.

Process
Carbon Smart designed a bespoke programme tailored at addressing the specific challenges of the printing industry. Supporting each individual participant, Carbon Smart survey individual printing business premises and collect data relevant for the calculation of a carbon footprint, this footprint is then presented to the business against an industry benchmark. Participants then attend a training workshop designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge to address excessive energy consumption and coaching to market these new green credentials to with business and engage staff and stakeholders. Carbon Smart is now over halfway through a programme to support 150 printers from within the 33 London boroughs.

Success
Carbon Smart have so far assisted nearly 80 printers through the program by providing practical energy saving advice and developing robust environmental policies. In partnership with Carbon Smart, the BPIF have been responsible for a projected reduction of approx. 420 tonnes of CO₂℮ by the project participants within one year of our intervention.
