Royal Bank of Scotland – Waste Management

The Group had committed to an ambitious waste reduction target for 2011; however, with offices and branches across the country and no standardised system for the collection and management of waste figures the Group needed focus and direction on their journey towards responsible and pro active waste management. To begin with, the Group was unclear on the challenges. We started with the basics, engaging the Group on a nationwide assessment aimed at identifying the source of waste.

To begin with we surveyed 4 sites, all with catering facilities to identify wastage within the business units and provided the Group with detailed breakdown of their waste by category, highlighting problem areas and identifying valuable materials with potential for being recycled. We also provided detailed recommendations for improvement of waste management at each site. By engaging with staff at various levels we were able to identify and highlight actions which they would support, thus assisting the Group in structuring their communications efforts.

The end goal was simple: develop internal benchmarking capabilities, equip the Group with the tools to forecast waste generation and propose a set of solution which would help the Group not only reduce waste generation but also the environmental impact of how waste is handled. Our success in meeting the client’s expectations speaks for itself:  3 months following the initial engagement we were commissioned to perform a likewise assessment at one of their key London offices, a site with over 4,000 staff.
