Ben is passionate about the need to take tangible practical action to tackle climate change. ‘We have done enough talking – every business can take action however difficult their situation appears. The key to success is getting people engaged at the right levels in each organisation.’

Ben has worked for over 15 years in business consulting delivering business improvement, cost reduction and efficiency gains. An engineering graduate from the University of Birmingham, Ben has worked in the UK and abroad across many sectors of the economy. Some of his clients include: United Utilities, Stora Enso, Wagon, Tereos, Sony Entertainment, Vodafone, Orange, Corus Group, Office Friendly Dealer Association and the BBC.

Louise Quarrell

Director

Louise leads Carbon Smart’s delivery service and brings with her extensive experience in managing the end-to-end lifecycle of environmental projects from conception to action, in both the private and public sectors. Some of her clients include: Gala Coral, Scottish and Southern Energy, E.ON, Mirror Group News, Rathbone Brothers Plc, EST, DECC, Defra, and Islington Council.

Louise is an MSc graduate from Manchester University and before joining Carbon Smart was Head of Environmental Services at Heston Lowe consultancy. Previous to this she was responsible for project delivery for the UK arm of Cool nrg, an international company specialising in mass-scale energy efficiency campaigns.

Alison

Alison Roe

Director

A founder of Carbon Smart and a Director of Paper Round Ltd, Alison read Soil and the Environment at Reading University. Alison has over 12 years of experience of designing and implementing environmental programmes for her clients.

Alison has worked with organisations such as Transport for London, Arup, British Airways, London Borough of Islington, Ministry of Justice and AMEC Facilities. Alison’s expertise is in waste, recycling and staff engagement and communication programmes.



William

William Swan

Chairman

One of the founders of Carbon Smart, William holds a degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and has many years experience of large scale environmental programme delivery. His clients have included WPP, National Magazines, The Financial Services Authority, DEFRA and London Borough of Bromley. William holds a number of directorships in the environmental field and maintains active links with several high profile consultancies and charities in the sector. His expertise is in waste, recycling and fleet management. William leads the development of scientific policy at Carbon Smart.

Vikas Ahuja

Associate

Vikas is a Mechanical Engineer by background and also holds an MBA from University of Cambridge. In his 10 years of project/programme management and consulting experience spanning IT, HVAC and enivronmental sustainability, Vikas has helped blue-chip clients such as British Airways, Cisco Systems, P & O NL, Aegis Media, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Vikas is an associate member of IEMA.

Debbie Clement

Head of Certification Programme

Debbie brings extensive business support and staff engagement experience to the team and is responsible for the delivery of the Carbon Smart Certification Programme. With a background in training and development and having managed an environmental programme for the London Borough of Croydon, Debbie’s experience has helped identify business priorities and enabled her to engage with staff which has led to improved environmental performance for over 700 organisations across a wide range of sectors.

Through Debbie’s work, businesses have received local, regional and national recognition, whilst increasing their profitability and profile through increased marketing and tender opportunities. Clients have included Mott MacDonald, Mondial Assistance, Chequers Contract Cleaning Services, ITC Concepts and First Impressions Last Longer.

Peter-Coy

Peter Coy

Senior associate

Peter has worked in management systems consultancy for over 12 years. Peter has successfully taken a wide variety of companies through the ISO 14001 Environmental Accreditation process. Having specialised in Quality Assurance (ISO 9001) and Environmental (ISO 14001) management systems, Peter is also experienced in integrating systems to incorporate the OHSAS 18001 (Health and Safety system). Peter holds a degree in the Physical Sciences, a post graduate Diploma in Management Studies, a Masters Degree in Training and Development and a Masters Degree in Safety and Environmental Management. He is a Chartered member both of the Institute of Personnel and Development and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Peter holds qualified Lead Auditor certification for Environmental, Quality and Safety systems.

Peter’s clients range from small businesses and SMEs to large multinational companies and have recently included a major spillage contractor that works closely with the Environment Agency, a company specialising in water jetting, a London based office supplies company and a company specialising in recycling.

Working closely with significant buying groups and trade organisations, Julie has supported over 250 small to medium businesses in improving their environmental performance during her career.  From environmental audit and review through to assistance in writing tender documentation and marketing material, Julie has wide knowledge of the multi-faceted environmental challenges businesses face in the market place.  With experience of a range of sectors from commercial print houses to recording studios and farms, Julie’s exposure to the world of business-generated carbon is broad and various.

Julie studied Biological Sciences at Oxford University and carries forward her knowledge and understanding of the natural world in her ongoing work.

Trevor

Trevor Floyd

Associate

Trevor spent the first 13 years of his career working throughout the world as a marine engineer for the Shell Oil Company. On his return to the UK he developed sales networks in a number of industries but specialised in energy and engineering related to power generation and marine applications in the UK and abroad. Trevor established the Tenby Consultancy in 1990, focusing on energy and environmental management. He also acts as a committee member for a number of organisations such as the BSI – EN16001 / ISO 5001 Energy Management Standard and is a trainer for the Energy Institute, CIBSE and MCC.

Trevor is also a public speaker and author on energy efficiency and environmental practices and consultant editor / contributor to various periodicals and business guides. He delivers staff development and training to organisations in energy / environmental best practice, compliance and standards and he is a motivational speaker on the process of organisational change. His specialities are strategy & policy related to energy waste minimisation, carbon accounting, solution development & implementation, standards, metering, monitoring & targeting, renewable energy and training.

Phil Jones

Chair of Advisory Board

Phil Jones has spent the last 25 years trying to make buildings more energy efficient, beginning with British Gas followed by 5 years as an energy consultant for WS Atkins investigating failing buildings. For the last 18 years he has run independent energy consultancy Building Energy Solutions where he carries out building energy research and training across a wide range of buildings and technologies. Phil is also a Visiting Research Fellow at London South Bank University, helping develop research activities and business partnerships in the energy field. He is also a member of CIBSE Council and the CIBSE Carbon Task Group.

Phil contributed to Part L2 2002 on metering and log books and has subsequently written CIBSE TM 31 – Building Log Books, TM39 – Building Energy Metering and is the main author of CIBSE Guide F – Energy Efficiency in Buildings. Phil has been closely involved in the CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants Register and is Chairman of the CIBSE Energy Performance Group. He was recently awarded the IMechE Construction & Building Services annual prize for his contribution to the art of building services engineering.

Klina Jordan

Klina Jordan

Marketing and Business Development Executive

Klina is responsible for marketing and business development at Carbon Smart. She has a Master’s Degree in Human Sciences from Oxford and has extensive experience in business development, marketing and general management as a result of running diverse projects across various sectors, including financial services, hospitality and the arts. Previous roles at JPMorgan, TowerGroup and the Open Gallery (which she set up and ran from 2005-2009) gave her the opportunity  to work with clients such as AstraZeneca, Coutts & Co. and The London Clinic.

Outside of work Klina is also involved with various community sustainability projects, including two of the ten Low Carbon Zones in London, and is a founding member of environmental groups Eco Archway and Operation Squirrel.

Artemis Kostareli

Environmental Manager

Artemis holds an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London, and a degree in Forestry and Environment from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

Artemis has worked with a wide variety of SMEs, providing environmental support to reduce their carbon footprints. She has carried out environmental audits and carbon footprinting for many businesses across London, as part of an ERDF project, helping them to reduce their operational costs and carbon emissions.

Artemis has developed environmental reports and action plans for numerous SMEs, covering aspects such as energy, waste, water, procurement and travel. She is passionate about delivering practical and tailored solutions to businesses to help them work towards a sustainable future.

She is an Associate Member of IEMA and a chartered member of the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece.

Hayley McDowall

Environmental Manager

After completing a BSc degree in Geography at Newcastle University Hayley initially worked at Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions where she became involved with a sustainability scheme aiming to recycle waste aggregates. She worked with clients including United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, Leeds Council and Manchester City Council. This experience inspired a passion for promoting environmental improvement in commercial industry.

Hayley then worked on an Institute for Sustainability funded scheme supporting SMEs to improve their environmental credentials and lower carbon footprints. She worked with 30 businesses across a diverse range of sectors. Hayley is currently working with SMEs based in the North West to aid their move into a lower carbon economy.

Olivia McGregor

Olivia McGregor

Executive Assistant to Managing Director

Olivia is Executive Assistant to the Managing Director, Ben Murray. She manages his diary and correspondence, prepares research, performs a support role in meetings and on occasion acts as a proxy.  As a delegate, she coordinates management processes and is presently focused on the internal business structure.  Olivia also plays a coordination role on client projects by ensuring knowledge within the team is shared.  Olivia has played a key role in the assurance research project by publicising the report Carbon Smart has produced and encouraging FTSE 350 companies to take up the guidelines the report advocates.

Olivia is passionate about fostering sustainable business practices, has a strong environmental ethos and is knowledgeable about the links between business practices and the environment. Olivia has a background in Social Sciences with a degree (BA Hons) in Anthropology and Theology from Durham University.

Karen

Karen Mecz

Senior Consultant

Karen is a Senior Consultant in Carbon Smart’s carbon and reporting team. She leads Carbon Smart’s assurance research and has worked with a wide range of clients on reporting, verification, carbon footprinting and energy management engagements. Recently she has helped clients to achieve BS EN 16001 certification in energy management, and is working with others to achieve the new ISO 50001 standard.

Karen holds an MSc with distinction in Business and Environment from Imperial College London, and a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Oxford. She is an Associate member of IEMA. Karen’s clients have included Aegis Plc, Rathbone Brothers Plc, Threadneedle Asset Management, and the Aldersgate Group.

Catherine

Catherine Radojcin

Communications and staff engagement

After completing a History degree at University College London, Catherine turned her attention to the environmental sector and the challenges it faces as it emerges into the business mainstream. She has been with Carbon Smart since it was founded, providing communcations and marketing expertise across a wide range of green issues. Catherine also provides staff engagement and communications support to Carbon Smart’s clients.

Caroline Riley

Senior Environmental Manager

A physicist with extensive environmental experience, Caroline manages the Carbon Smart certification programme in the North West, advising SMEs on carbon and resource savings they can make. This is a groundbreaking project that provides Smart Monitors to participating organisations to help them manage their carbon emissions. The project will create a local, online community sharing real-time information, environmental knowledge and best practice.

Previously, Caroline led Envirolink’s Low Carbon Demonstration programme that engaged over 400 SMEs in energy saving technologies. Caroline also has fourteen years of experience in sustainable development at United Utilities, where she performed environmental audits to maximise energy efficiency and manage environmental risk.  As stakeholder manager, she was seconded to the Mersey Basin Campaign, engaging widely across the North West.

Joe

Jo Southernwood

Associate

After graduating from Cambridge with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Jo decided to focus her career in the Environmental Sector and gained an MSc in Sustainable Development for SMEs via a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with London South Bank University. Jo’s experience covers a broad range of subjects including energy auditing, climate change strategies, renewable & decentralised energy, low carbon buildings, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, and waste reduction.

Jo has carried out energy audits and carbon footprinting for variety of public and private sector clients, helping them to reduce their operating costs and carbon emissions by recommending the most appropriate & cost effective measures for managing energy.

Robert

Robert Tacon

Associate

Robert spent over 35 years in banking of which 27 were with Standard Chartered Bank, before retiring in March 2008. During his last 10 years with Standard Chartered he initiated its environmental risk management policies and processes which were eventually expanded to cover social risk. He introduced the Equator Principles into the Bank and was the bank’s representative with UNEP FI from 2001. He was treasurer of the Initiative for 2 years before stepping up to the Chairman role in late 2007. Robert stepped down at the end of 2009 after hosting the highly acclaimed UNEP FI Global Roundtable in Cape Town. He continues to have an advisory role with UNEP FI. Presently Robert dedicates his time and efforts to delivering training, policy development and climate change solutions to the banking industry. Robert travels extensively for business purposes and has a good knowledge of countries as diverse as Malaysia, China, Dubai, East, West and Southern Africa.

Miruna

Miruna Valmar

Consultant

Miruna brings extensive expertise to Carbon Smart’s project delivery team, focusing on sustainability strategies and the deployment of effective business solutions to improve resource management. Miruna has worked with a wide range of clients, including RBS, Lloyd’s, the London Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Aegis Group, identifying opportunities to embed sustainability into business operations and building tools for a successful integration. Miruna specialises in the development of waste management strategies – tackling the full waste life cycle from source to final use with the aim of deriving carbon and cost savings; her experience covers a variety of sites and facilities in the corporate and commercial sectors.

Miruna’s second expert area is sustainable procurement, focusing on supply chain emissions profiling and advising organisations such as the Commonwealth Secretariat and Iron Mountain on strategies for monitoring and minimising the environmental impact of their purchasing.

Miruna began her work in the sustainability field on the strategy team at Futerra Sustainability Communications following her graduation from the London School of Economics.
